Fairwinds Treatment Modalities

At Fairwinds Treatment Center, we utilize the Fairwinds Restoration Treatment Model. This restorative model is accomplished by using a combination of treatment models collectively to secure a single goal of helping the client regain his or her highest functioning ability.

Treatment models may include the following, depending on the individual treatment plan design:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Based on the Cognitive Model of Emotional Response, CBT works from the idea that our thoughts cause our feelings and behaviors, not external things, like people, situations and events. The benefit of this fact is that we can change the way we think to feel and act better even if the situation does not change. CBT has a solid evidence base in terms of its effectiveness in reducing symptoms and preventing relapse.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

The purpose of DBT is to help the client get into a state of mind referred to as “wise mind”. Wise mind is the middle ground in the dialectic between rational mind and emotional mind. To be too far on the side of rational mind would mean focusing only things, such as facts and figures, and ignoring and suppressing emotion. To be too far on the side of emotional mind would mean being so blinded by strong emotions that one would not be able to consider the facts.

Individual Psychotherapy

Clients attend individual counseling sessions to discuss different aspects of their lives and difficulties they may have in solving some of their problems associated with their eating disorder. Many people experience counseling as a safe place to share their deepest thoughts and feelings without judgment. As the relationship between the client and the therapist develops, therapy can provide a framework where one can create the life he or she desires. There is something very healing that occurs when the client can feel understood in an atmosphere of safety and acceptance.

At Fairwinds Treatment Center, individual psychotherapy is just one of several models used for the treatment of eating disorders such as anorexia, or to treat co-occurring conditions.

Our eating disorders treatment programs feature unique sets of treatment modalities. These modalities and objectives can be facilitated separately or in conjunction with each other, depending on the individual needs of our clients. This focus on dual diagnosis treatment services for eating disorders is what makes our approach to treatment so successful.

Experiential Expressive Therapy

This therapy has been growing steadily in popularity because of its unique effectiveness and efficiency. It is a role play method through which past, present, and future issues can be resolved and when combined with more traditional modalities serves to elicit material from the unconscious that allows one to fill in perceptual, cognitive, and emotional gaps. Material that has been out-of-vision can come to the surface where it can be worked through and seen in a new light. Its unique ability to give voice to hidden wounds has made the experiential model a therapy of choice.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

EMDR integrates elements of several psychotherapies in structured protocols that are designed to maximize treatment effects. These include psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, experiential and body-centered therapies. EMDR is an information-processing therapy and uses an eight-phase approach. After processing, clients generally report that the emotional distress related to the memory has been eliminated or greatly diminished, and that they have gained important cognitive insights.

Family Systems Therapy

Family Systems Therapy is a branch of psychotherapy that works with families and couples in intimate relationships to nurture change and development. Viewed in terms of the systems of interaction between family members, the therapy emphasizes family relationships as an important factor in psychological health. Therefore, the family is an integral part of the recovery process and is fundamentally included as part of the overall solution.

Gestalt

Gestalt therapy is an existential and experiential psychotherapy that focuses on the individual’s experience in the present moment, the therapist-client relationship, the environmental and social contexts in which these things take place, and the self-regulating adjustments people make as a result of the overall situation. It emphasizes personal responsibility.

Psycho Educational

Psycho-educational services are specialized forms of education aimed at helping people learn about a broad range of emotional and behavioral difficulties, their effects and strategies for dealing with them. This method offers the client a forum to: address and resolve the specific problems leading to treatment; increase insight and awareness; and increase interpersonal and communication skills utilizing alternative forms of self-expression and exploration.

Psychodynamic

Most psychodynamic approaches are centered on the idea that some maladaptive functioning is in play and that this maladaption is, at least in part, subconscious. The presumed maladaption develops early in life, and it is posited that in later years the client will begin to feel some dissonance in his/her day-to-day life as a function of this paradigm. The psychodynamic therapist intervenes to treat the discomfort associated with the poorly formed function, which helps the client acknowledge the existence of the maladaption. The therapist and client then work together to develop strategies for change.
